What We Are Learning
Reading
We recently began three different Literature Circle books. A different group is now reading Things Not Seen, about a boy who wakes up and is invisible. One group is reading Walk Two Moons, a Newbery Medal award-winning book about a girl named Sal and her travels across the country with her grandparents. The third group is reading My Side of the Mountain, an adventure book about a boy named Sam who ran away to live alone in the wilderness.
Math
We just finished our chapter on decimals. Now we are beginning a chapter on factoring numbers, prime and composite numbers, least common multiples, greatest common factors, and equivalent fractions.
Writing
The class just finished their March articles for the Cole Chronicle, and they completed their folktales. The students did a great job with their folktales and wrote excellent dialogue between the characters. They were very creative with either explaining why things happen, or explaining how characters learned a lesson.
Social Studies
The class just finished learning their South American countries and capitals and did a great job on their test over all of them. They have successfully learned all the major countries and capitals of the entire Western Hemisphere! We just finished a chapter about the countries of Middle America and Spanish-speaking South America, and we will soon begin a chapter on Brazil.
Science
Everyone did a great job on their Science Fair projects! We were really pleased with how they turned out and with how well the students understood the concepts. We just began a unit on force and motion, and will be learning about simple and compound machines.
